Probably the most frustrating aspect of graphic design especially is Fonts. There are literally millions of fonts available and it is always hard to choose the perfect one for your design. You also have to understand the type of fonts and their characteristics. However, basic understanding of the font and installing them is not that hard. Selecting the perfect font, size and font color are the most time-consuming tasks in graphic design.
While selecting fonts for your design, you have to consider various aspects of the graphics that you are using in your design. For example, if you are creating an advertisement for print media, you should consider the clear font used by the press. If you designing a brochure, consider using a True Typeface font which can be read clearly without putting strain on the eyes of the reader. It is important that the font is easily read in a flow. Fonts contribute largely in the success of an advertising campaign whether it is billboards, brochure, Advertisement (electronic or print) or any other type of graphic design. Another important thing is to send the message across through your design.
To help you understand the fonts used in design, consider the following tips:
- Increase readability – If your design includes text, they should be read clearly. To increase the readability, you should consider use a proper font like Ariel. Make it large enough for normal people to read without putting any effort. Consider using a 12pt or a 14pt size for your text.
- Communicating with words - By including text in your design, you want to communicate through words. A good headline should have a proper font like Tahoma big enough to get attention quickly. If you want people to see the headline first, use a Tahoma font big enough to be read as soon as the viewer sees the design. The point is to highlight the most visual or effective element in the graphic design first. If it is a headline, use a good font, 16pt in size. If it is a visual element, consider making it more prominent.
- The flow in the text - Natural flow in the design is the most important thing a designer should know. Each design element should lead into the other element as the view shifts from one part of the design to another. If your design has considerable amount of text, you should put emphasis on the headline and put the text right under it to create the harmonious flow from one element to another
- Avoid fancy fonts – It entirely depends on the basic purpose of the design. But the rule of the thumb is to avoid fancy and unusual fonts that portray you or the product you are designing an advertising of as lame and funny rather than serious and focused. Readers would never trust a product or a message in the design if it portrays a non-serious attitude. Humans can un-consciously sense the truth behind an advertisement by looking at it in detail. For example, you have designed a banner for a local brewery to be displayed on the front entrance of a local festival. If you use unusual fonts (italicized or without proportion), the banner will be considered as a joke or a gimmick to con people into buying a beer that’s not worth its price. You will fail as a designer because people got the wrong message.
