Simply put, logo is a unique identity that represents a company, product or a brand visually
A Logo is a company’s visual representation; a business image. In fact, the most famous brands in the world have unique logos that people remember and relate to when they think of a particular product. A Logo is a part of brand building strategy; one of the most important marketing strategies.
Creating a logo is, perhaps, the most difficult task in graphic design. The main feature is the abstract presentation of a company’s core business and the services/products it offers. Creating graphics for electronic and print media are easy since the canvas is big and there is a lot of space to create a visual message. But logos have a small canvas and you have to precisely tell people about a company’s core values and their services/products in few lines, words and dots.
The first and foremost rule is to brainstorm. There are basically three types of logos: Font-based logos, illustration logos and abstract logos. Font-based logos like IBM, Microsoft and Sun employ a common font and give it a twist to represent their unique identity. There are illustration logos that illustrate the product/service of a company. For example, an interior decoration company would use a hammer and a paint brush as their logo to represent their core business. However, abstract logos are the most interesting type of logos. They abstractly represent the psychology of the company. For example, Nike’s logo spawns an image of a ‘right’ company in the mind of the consumers.
There are quite a few software programs in the market that helps you create a logo. A few of the best are Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator (I always use Illustrator), and it has been that way for a while because they give you freedom to do almost anything; design anything and save the design in any image – file format. You can use an array of software that are solely created for logo designs. But I found Adobe Illustrator to be the best when it comes to graphic design and logo creation.
While brainstorming, create what you have in mind. Believe me you will create a lot of interesting items if you just let your imagination run wild. When you sit back and look at what you have come up with, based on the goals of your company, it will be fairly easy for you to finalize a few designs before you finish your brainstorming session.
To get ideas and research logos of famous and not-so-famous companies, you can visit www.brandsoftheworld.com. They host an editable file of almost every famous logo. You can take inspiration from them or merge elements from a variety of famous logos to create a unique one.
You can also check the competitors of the business you are designing a logo for. Research is important in logo design. You need to research a lot to come up with something interesting and unique; something that people can relate to. Take an example of Pepsi. The Pepsi logo is quite lively and is the symbol that comes in our mind when we think of fizzy drinks. This is the success of a logo. You have to design something that people can use as a reference in their minds when they try to remember or relate to a specific product.
With a live imagination, understanding of the company’s core business, values and their competencies, Adobe Illustrator and lots of patience, you can create lively and unique logos that will give your client a unique presence in the marketplace.
